Lots of people are looking for a holistic approach to their health. One of the products that people may have heard a lot about is essential oils. These are natural solutions that have a number of different health benefits that many people have already taken advantage of; however, there are lots of different essential oil uses. What are some of the ways that people can use these oils?
An Essential Oil Diffuser
One of the most common ways that people use an essential oil is by taking advantage of a diffuser. In this method, an essential oil is placed inside of the device. Some devices will require water to be added before the oil can diffuse. Most diffusers will require heat, which warms the oil to the point of evaporation. The oil fills the room with a comforting scent that often relaxes the body and the mind.
Dry Evaporation of Essential Oils
Some essential oils aren’t compatible with water and, thus, people use dry evaporation instead. People can drop a little bit of the essential oil on cotton balls or tissues. Then, the liquid evaporates into the air. In some cases, people actually sniff the cotton ball or the tissue. The major advantage of this method is that it is quick and requires no equipment. People can even use this method in their car! The scent also dissipates pretty quickly, so it doesn’t leave a lingering smell.
Essential Oil Steam
Essential oils can also be steamed, which has the added benefit of acting as a humidifier. This can help people get over a cough or cold by helping to clear the sinuses. First, get a bowl of steaming water. Then, drip the oil into the steaming bowl. Finally, breathe deeply. The steam quickly evaporates the oil. To concentrate the scent, try placing a hot towel on top of the head and over the bowl.
Spraying an Essential Oil
Another way to use an essential oil is to take a few drops of the oil and place it in a canister of water. Then, shake the mixture and spray it into the room. This is a great way to set the mood in the room or to stimulate the mind for an important project.
An Essential Oil Compress
Many people use an essential oil compress directly on the skin. This allows the oil to absorb quickly into the skin and can expedite the benefits; however, make sure the oil is safe to touch the skin. First, dilute the oil in water or oil. Then, let the oil soak onto a dressing. Sometimes, this can be followed by heat or cold after skin application depending on the oil that was applied.
Gargling an Essential Oil
Many people have heard of gargling salt water for a sore throat; however, this can also be done with an essential oil. By combining the benefits of the oil with the traditional salt water, people may recover from a sore throat faster. First, dilute the essential oil in water. Then, gargle it in the back of the throat. Remember to spit it out. Do not swallow the oil. An easy example is to use this with a tea tree oil.
Taking a Bath in an Essential Oil
Essential oil mixes can even be added to a bath. Use a dispersant and add it to the bath immediately before getting in. This helps the oil absorb into the skin while also releasing it in the air where it can be inhaled.
